Nice & Cold

Beach: Klode
Water temp: 64
Waves: One foot rollers
Water Clarity:  excellent
Next Swim:  Wednesday 6AM Klode

No, not the beer.  The water.  On our way back up the bluff two nice ladies asked us "how's the water", and we replied "nice and cold".  We had just completed one of our "no wetsuit or bust" swims, and with the water temp at 64, it was damn near bust.  But we got 'er done.  It was nice too, very clear water and zillions of minnows and small fish.

Lessons learned the hard way:  you can stay in very cold water a long time, much longer than you might think.  Your hands and feet might get cold, but the body will protect the core and vital organs.  The problem is when you get out and all that cold blood in the extremities starts flowing back to the core.  You'll start shivering in a hurry, and it may take hours to warm up again.  So the trick is to get out well before you feel really chilled.  We put this lesson to good use today by limiting our swim to 15 minutes.
