Friday July 1st 6AM

Holiday weekend swim times to be determined.
Saturday at 2:30 we will be celebrating Crash's (29th?) birthday at the Estabrook Beer Garden

Crew: Diablo, Robert, Crash, Jamie, Linda, Showgirl, Nivens McTwist, Diana, Rosa, Christina, Annie, Paula, Nannook, Patriarch

An unusually tranquil and peaceful morning on the beach.  Part of the reason was the clear quiet weather, but there was more to it than that.  Aha!  I know why - neither Capt'n nor Panini were there!

We witnessed a heart stopping drama in Tuesday's heavy surf.  Mama duck swam near shore with 5-6 little ducklings bobbing along very close to her.  But a treacherous wave separated one of the ducklings from the group and threw him up on shore.  He desperately tried to rejoin his family but kept getting thrown back onto shore.  For a minute it didn't seem possible that little ball of fluff could make it back to his family in that heavy surf.  You could see that mama duck was upset as she swam back and forth as close in as should could without endangering the other ducklings.  Finally after what seemed like forever (maybe two minutes) and after several failed attempts the little duckling plunged into the surf, running so fast that he seemed to be literally running on top of the water.  He made it back to mom.  Whew!

Swimming Wednesday Night?

Looks like a lovely evening for a swim!  Kahuna's up for a swim this evening, but the trick is figuring out a good way to get Kahuna up and down the bluff, and in and out of the Lake.  Kahuna has his suggestions:

Itch has his:

Or for better distance, we could construct a trebuchet:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyCJ69GU974.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR26RMI9T8c.

If you plan on swimming Wednesday evening, please indicate in the comments.  Thanks!

Good Start

Next Swims:  Tue-Fri, June 28 - July 1st, 6AM every morning
Wednesday June 29th 6PM
Maybe other evening swims - check back
Correction:  In yesterdays blog entry I put a swim on Wed June 27, Wednesday is the 29th, not the 27th

Last Swim:  Monday June 27 6AM
Water Temp: 60/61 "decent"
Waves:  Calm and smooth
Water Clarity: Excellent
Crew:  Linda, Crash, Diablo, Capt'n, Forger, Christa, Panini, Showgirl, Nivens McTwist, Patriarch

This season is off to a really good start with much warmer lake temperatures than the same time last year.  Except for the smelly dead little fishes, which are mostly gone, it's been great.  I'm looking forward to a Big Bay swim sometime soon - stay tuned.

Welcome back to our good friend Linda who is visiting on her annual sojourn from Lake Erie. She is looking for people who would like to swim earlier than 6AM, please comment if you are interested.

Snow in June?

Next Swims:  Monday June 27th - Friday July 1st 6AM every morning
Also:  Wednesday June 27th 6PM
Perhaps:  Additional Evening Swims if conditions are good, check back frequently

Last Swim: Sunday June 26th 1PM
Water temp: 63-64 but warmer and colder pockets, "decent"
Waves:  Small
Water Clarity:  Excellent
Crew:  Gumdrop, Panini, North Shore Nancy, Handyman Hank, Valerie, Mighty Mac, Nanook, Dave, Lorraine, Kahuna, Mr. Anonymous, Crash, Itch, Capt'n, Diablo, Scarface, Patriarch
Suit/Skin: 8/9
Shots: 14

The cottonwood trees on the bluff were blowing seeds everywhere, and the way they danced in the air gave the appearance of a gentle snowstorm.  It added to the magic of a near perfect day on the beach.

The only flaw is the many boats and jet skis that zoom through the bay, today and on other warm weekend afternoons. I looked it up. There are a ton of boating regulations, including one that says that boats and jet skis should operate at "no wake" speed within 200 feet of shore and within 100 feet of a swimmer.  But these regulations are obviously ignored.  Also I doubt if boaters or jet ski operators are watching out for swimmers especially far offshore.

So my conclusion is that the only safe thing to do when boats and jet skis are around is to swim very close to shore.  I suppose this sounds like surrendering to the dark forces. I know many of you like to swim deep. But any confrontation between boater and swimmer is not likely to turn out good for the swimmer.  So I'm just saying; be careful out there.

Itch has the Pitsch

Next Swims:  Sunday June 26th 1PM, Monday-Friday 6AM

Last Swim: Saturday June 25th 1PM
Water Temp: 69
Waves: 1-2 feet, very choppy and irregular
Water Clarity:  Very Good
Crew: Kahuna, Diablo, Nanook, Neo, Panini, Not Dave's Wife, Liz, Itch, Handyman Hank, Showgirl,  Patriarch, and Crash on Deck
Skin/Suit: 9/2
Shots: 18?

I made it back from M-22 just in time.  One more day and I would have surrendered and stayed there.  Pampered by endless sand beach, warm water, beachside hot tub, bar and grill.  I had no idea how nice it is over there on the other side.  I was raised a committed Yooper firm in the belief that there is only one truly Great Lake: Superior.  Those living "Below the Bridge" were contemptible trolls and there was no reason ever to venture there.  How wrong I was!

Anyway it's good to be back amongst the crazy wretched insane Klode Kru.  My return was nearly marred by disaster though.  I had forgotten that before I left I had purchased and used Otto's last bottle of Pitsch.  Capt'n was out too.  Oh No!  Itch to the rescue!  Apparently he has cornered the local market on Pitsch.  It was nice of him to share, but of course the down side is we have to be nice to him (maybe that's why he did it?).  I know it's difficult but if Paul Ryan can support Trump I guess we can be nice to Itch.

Speaking of cornering the market, Kahuna has cornered the market on crazy.  Against the express order of his doctor and (even crazier) his wife, he swam with us today.  We had to wheelchair him down the path and back up and he had to limp on crutched across the sand.  The most the pathetic part is that he thinks his predicament makes him sexually attractive to women.

But it gets even crazier. Panini (who else?) tops Kahuna by talking about the fetish of some men who like to be treated like pet dogs.  She even had a name for it (I forget).  I had never heard of or even imagined such a thing so it makes we wonder how she knows this (on the other hand I'm not sure I want the answer to this question).

I missed you guys.  It's good to be back.
Patriarch

Showgirl Swim-a-versary

Next Swims: Friday  6/24 5 PM (or later-- post suggestions to blog)

Saturday, Sunday 1:00 PM both days

Last Swims:  Friday 06/24, 6AM
  Water Temp: 62
Waves: medium chop/waves out of the north
  Water Clarity: good
Dead Fish: RIP little fishes, and good riddance to you
Crew:  Forger, Cap'n, Nanook, Sarah, Kristy, Showgirl, Diablo
  Skin/Suit: 4/3
  Streak: 23 days

Today was another beautiful, sunny day at the beach.  It was a wee bit of a struggle against the waves to mudslide, but we did it.  I expected the return trip to be easier than it was.

I hope everyone is enjoying the ToAD bike races around the area.  Shorewood was last night, and there are more the next three days (Bayview, Downer, Tosa), here's the schedule:
http://tourofamericasdairyland.com/schedule/schedule.php

Lorraine is planning to swim tonight at 5PM.  If that time doesn't work for you, post alternatives to the blog coments.

I didn't see Mr. Stealthy, aka Diablo, at the beach or in the water this morning, but that doesn't mean he wasn't there.

Today is my swim-a-versary-- the anniversary of my first swim with the Kru back in 2010.  Lake Michigan swimming will change your life. For the better, of course.

Avoiding Diablo

Next Swims: Friday  6/24 , 6:AM and 5PM (or later, post suggestions to blog)

Last Swims:  Thurs 06/23, 6AM
Water Temp:
  Waves: none
  Water Clarity: Excellent
Dead Fish: None in the water, plenty stinking up the beach
  Crew:  Diablo, Dave
  Skin/Suit: 1/1
  Streak: 22 days

Swim Recap from Diablo:

"Si, for a moment I thought this morning that everyone was avoiding me. No Yoga Moms, no recognizable vehicles in the parking lot, no friendly, huge flies.

When I got to the beach (late of course) somebody was at Kahuna's regular spot.  No, it was not Kahuna. That will require a log of cojones from Kahuna to rebel against SqueezeaKahuna's mandate.  Anyhow, like I said before, it was not Kahuna's cojones at the beach, it was Dave wondering if anybody was swimming.  And swim we did, in clear, non-choppy waters and 60's temp.

By the by, the beach is still kind of fishy.

Full Moon in the Parking Lot

Next Swims: Thurs - Friday 6AM 6/22-24

Last Swims:  Wednesday 06/22, 6AM
Water Temp: 57
  Waves: none
  Water Clarity: Excellent
Dead Fish: None in the water, plenty stinking up the beach
Crew:  Nivens McTwist, Cap'n, Showgirl, and Diablo, who comes and goes like the night.
  Skin/Suit: 3/1
Streak: 21 days  <-- now this is a streak to maintain!

It was a quiet morning at the beach.  The cooler water at first made us think we wouldn't swim very far, but in the end, we all swam to mudslide, though I think Nivens swam a bit further.  Diablo was just scampering up the beach as we returned.  I'm starting to think he's avoiding us.

When we got up to the parking lot, I noticed a car near mine that was running, but appeared to be empty.  A small, red, sportscar.  I tip-toed a bit closer and spied a tangle of arms and legs.  I would recommend that these folks ditch the sportscar and get a minivan.

I forgot to mention one of the highlights of Monday morning's swim:  two deer frolicking along the shore.

Dear Bloggerbee -
This morning swimming was brought to you by the Friends of Yoga Moms.

Special mention goes to Mr. Anonymous and Scooby for their participation and long time commitment to the Swim Society of South East Wisconsin.

Although the Kru did not have a clear understanding of the water temp, that didn't stop them to formalize a fantastic swim to Cedar Grove.

Clear water, no waves, stinky fish on the beach, sunny and... enormous flies.

Crew:  Panini, Showgirl, Diablo, Patrarch, Super Hera, Handyman Hank
Skin/Suit: 4.5/1.5
Streak: 19 days

Sunday the uncountable masses of dead, disgusting fish continued to clog the water.  To my horror, eleven brave swimmers swam thru the fish and headed south.  On their return, there remarks were a mix of "great swim" and "that was disgusting."

I decided I didn't need it that bad.

I also want to go on record that I was not the jokester who put the fish in Patrarch's bag, nor did I try to put one down the back  of his swim trunks.

Loraine and Gumdrop will be swimming Tuesday at 6pm.  They are negotiable on the time, so post to the blog if you want an evening swim at a different time

Today, Monday's swim, was a totally different story. The horrifying masses of fish were gone, tho their stink remains.  Or should I say, their remains stink.  A lot.

The water was mostly calm, with a slight chop out of the south.  It was marvelous.

Congrats to Handyman Hank on finishing Grandma's Marathon in Duluth.  Today he modeled his cute new wetsuit shorts for us.

Kill-a-Fish

Next Swim: Sunday June 19th 1PM, also Monday - Friday 6AM

Last Swim:  Saturday June 18th 1PM
Water Temp: 66
Waves: Dead Calm
Lots of dead alewives floating near shore, not near so many further out
Water Clarity: Excellent
Crew: Mr. Anonymous, Itch, Liz, Lenore, Panini, Showgirl, Jack Frost, Diablo, Nanook, Patriarch
Skin/Suit: 8/2
Shots: 10
Streak: 17 days

Sick. Perverse. Juvenile.  Today the my crew mates sunk to new lows.

First they harassed and heckled Kahuna as he gimped down to the beach and into the water on crutches, demonstrating their lack of empathy and at the same time Kahuna's complete lack of common sense.

Next they heckled and hooted and leered they watched Mr Anonymous give Panini a ride, demonstrating depravity and debauchery.

The final sick joke was revealed when I emptied my swim bag at home, and discovered a dried out dead fish on the bottom.  Even on this depraved Crew I think there are only two sickos that would actually find this amusing, Diablo and Panini (although perhaps I give Showgirl too much credit).  Don't worry guys, payback is coming.

Oh yes, about the swimming (this blog is about swimming, right?).  It was a perfect swim day except for one thing.  Zillions of small dead fish (alewives?) floating in the water near shore.  By swimming south and away from shore we were able to avoid most of them.  Showgirl and Panini said there were no dead fish in the water at 9:30AM, so hopefully they will disappear as quickly as they came.

Just in case we had swallowed any disgusting water we cleaned out our intestines with a shot of Killepitsch to Kill-a-Fish.

Gloomy & Grumpy

Next Swim: Friday June 17th 6AM

Last Swim: Thursday June 16th 6AM
Water Temp: 58 (Aye Allright!)
Waves:  1 foot rollers, current from the north
Water Clarity: Good
Crew:  Diablo, Itch, Panini, Hank, Patriarch
Skin/Suit: 2/3
Streak: 15 days

The beach this morning: foggy, cool, drizzly, damp, cloudy, dark, in a word gloomy.  The Kru this morning:  bitchy, whiny, negative, sleepy, melancoly, obnoxious, in a word grumpy.

But by the time we finished the swim the fog had lifted, the sun was poking through the clouds, dramatically shining a spotlight on the lake.  Spirits had lifted too, the conversation on the path up the bluff was lighthearted and happy.  Ah, the magic elixir of emersion in Lake Michigan.

I was thrilled to see the Patriarch's face (and the rest of him ;) ) in the parking lot this morning after a too-long absence.  Welcome back Patriarch.

Finally, the skins outnumbered the suits this morning as we headed north.  Super Hera disappeared into the distance.  The rest of us turned back sooner, to swim against the current back to the beach.

Splash, Splash, Splash, Boom

Next  Swim: Wed., 6:00 AM
Next Swims: Thurs., 06/16-17, 6:00 AM

Last Swim:
Temp: 58.3 (per the Meat-O-Meter 5000)
Waves: swells 1-2
Clarity: Low.
Crew:  Mr. Anonymous, Kahuna
Suit/Skin: 1.5/.5
Streak Days: 14

"O what a beautiful morning, look at those pretty puffy clouds up in the sky to the South, and look, the temp chart looks very promising, I bet the beach will be crowded this morning! Onward to Klode!"  Wait, 6:00 AM, and just Mr. Anonymous' sleepy face greets me in the parking lot?  What's up with the Kru?

At the beach, the water was looking grey and kind of swelly,  But the Meat-o-Meter reports 58.3!  Hooray!  (Even if the dark swelly water doesn't feel like 58.3)  The sky is getting darker, but we didn't come here to just look at the Lake.  Hop in.  Quickly loose sight of Mr. A in the swells.  As the current is coming from the North, it takes awhile to get the half mile to the birches.  No Mr. A in sight.  Head back.  What's this?  Drip, drip, drop little April shower?  Fat chance.  Remember the opening credits in Gilligan's Isle?  More like splash, splash, splash full-blown June down pour.  Get back to the rocks, shoot the gaps, and what do my wondrous eyes behold?  The Spaniard waiting to pull me out, shaking his head at my stupidity!  What are you doing swimming in thunder and lightening?  I honestly said I hadn't heard or seen any.  So lesson for the future, when you are out for a swim, and it whips up that fast and that hard, maybe its wiser to exit the lake where you are, for a nice jog on the beach.

Everybody got wet in the park today.  Including the scantily clad work-out group members.  Kahuna gallantly offers to give them rides in his car, so they can get out of those wet clothes, but they all responsibly decline.

And for those who didn't make it Saturday for the shipwreck, Beer and BBQ swim, here's what you missed.  Cheers!

(no more) Swimming with the Fishes

Next  Swim: 6:30PM Tuesday 06/14 - keeping the streak alive

Waves: low swells
Clarity: Low.  We need some clarity.
Crew: Cap'n, Panini, Showgirl, Nivens McTwisp, Diablo
Suit/Skin: 4/1
Streak Days: 13

The morning started grey, but the sun was streaking thru the clouds as we finished our swims this morning.

And I'm happy to report that the hoards of creepy dead silvery fish that were all over in the water yesterday have... moved on to greener pastures.

The Kru's First Underwear Swim

Next Swims: M-F, 06/13-17, 6:00 AM

Last Swims:
Saturday 06/11, 5:30 PM
Sunday 06/12, 3:00 PM

Saturday 06/11, 5:30 PM
Temp 54-ish.
Waves: none
Clarity: Excellent! Amazing!
Crew: Panini, No-Ply, Crash, Brent, Handyman Hank, Showgirl
Shore Support: Gumdrop
Suit/Skin: 2/4 (again, just the Ladies were skin)
Streak Days: 11
Shots:  8

Saturday was our first double-dip day of 2016. We had such a great swim earlier, that we decided to do it again at 5:30pm.  We all were hoping that the heat of the day would have warmed up the water, but alas, no.  It was still a stunning swim.  The water clarity was incredible, no waves, so we swam south to avoid the crowds of people enjoying the beach.

You may have heard of Milwaukee's underwear bike rides?  Well, Handyman Hank created the undwear swim Saturday evening.  He arrived at the beach only to realize he had forgotten to put his trunks on.  Though Gumdrop offered up a spare speedo, HH balked at that.  Instead, he gamely ditched his shorts, put his wetsuit, and went for a swim.

It was also a gender bending swim as Brent made his 2016 Klode debut wearing his wife's wetsuit.

And... I redeemed myself be bringing the 'pitsch to the second swim.

Sunday 06/12, 3:00 PM
Temp 55
Waves: 1ft swells
Clarity: zero
Crew: Panini, Kahuna, Gumdrop, Diablo, Neo, Cap'n, Nanook, Showgirl, Austin, Valerie
Shore Support: Crash, SqueezaShowgirl
Suit/Skin: 8.5/1.5
Streak Days: 12
Shots:  16+ 'pitsch and kringle
Numskull Swims: 1

The amazing water conditions of Saturday left us today, and we heard the sound of waves on the shore as we headed down the ramp.  The water was rough near shore.  Offshore there were medium-large swells out of the north.  In spite of the conditions, plenty of us swam, and the return trip was fast.  (Kahuna's lava pants count as the half in the suit/skin tally.)

Several of us did the Locust Street Beer run, so the tally on the numskull swim may be up for debate.

Even Bigger Than I Thought It Would Be! (That's what SHE said.)

Next Swim: Saturday 06/11, 5:30 PM
Sunday 06/12, 3:00 PM
M-F 06/13-17, 6:00 AM

Last Swims:
Saturday 06/11 - 11:00AM, Atwater Beach in Shorewood
Temp 54-ish.  The duck said 60.  The duck lies.  F*** the duck.
Waves: minor chop
Clarity: Excellent!
Crew: Kahuna, Gumdrop, Nanook, Electra, No-Ply, 2-Ply, Crash, Showgirl, Handyman Hank
Suit/Skin: 6/3
Streak Days: 11
Shots:  A big fat ZERO due to my epic fail

Today was one of those timeless, magic, super-relaxing summer days.

We met at the top of the hill at Atwater beach, and took those long stairs down .  Gumdrop tossed the duck-thermometer into the water.  My toe-test said 54ish, the duck said 60.  The duck lied.  Three of us decided to go skin.  (Nanook, No-Ply, Showgirl. Yep, just the ladies.)

We sighted on the weather bouy until we spotted the shipwreck of the Appomattox.  Water clarity was excellent, so we swam the length of the ship, rumored to be the longest wooden boat ever made.

The weather bouy looked close.  So close.  So Kahuna, 2-Ply, and Gumdrop swam on.  The rest of us swam back to shore, and relaxed in the beautiful sun until they returned.

And as if that wasn't enough fun, we went back up the bluff, secured a picnic table in the shade, and got a fantastic meal courtesy of the Shorewood Men's Club. We ate, drank beer, and listened to live music. Panini was a surprise guest! These are the elements of greatness. And, as if that wasn't quite enough swimming and fun, we're going again at 5:30 tonight.

Friday 06/10 - 9:00AM - The John McGivern thing
Crew: Capn, Kahuna, No-Ply, 2-Ply, Forger, and others?
Streak: 10
Lots more details, but I wasn't there.

This Isn't a Fashion Show

Next Swims: Thurs, Fri 6/9&10,  6am

Last Swims: Tuesday 6/7 - Diablo kept our streak going, and
Wednesday 6/8 6am
Temp: 51.3
Waves: medium chop out of the north, with the occasional bigger wave
Clarity: cloudy near shore, excellent offshore
Crew: Itch, Diablo, Kahuna, Super Hera, Showgirl
Streak Days: 8

"This isn't a fashion show," said Kahuna, looking remarkably like the Unabomber.

We swam north to cedar grove against the wavy chop.  In spite of the waves, the sky was blue, the water was clear, and the rising sun sparkled on the water.  It was beautiful.

My particular favorite moment of the early morning was when I heard those three little words that are my favorite in all the world.  No, not "I love you."  My favorite words:  "You were right," as spoken to me by Kahuna regarding our Saturday altercation about the flowers.

And to add some educational/folkloric content to the blog, Itch educated us about found pennies:
If you should find a penny face up, pick it up for a day of luck.
If you should find it face down, leave it lay on the ground.

It's Bike to Work Week! Brought to you by the Lake Michigan Swimmers

Next Swims: Tues-Fri 6am, tho Tues has 2ft waves in the forecast...

Last Swim: Monday June 6th, 6am
Temp: 48.6
Waves: none
Clarity: crystal
Crew: Itch, Diablo, Super Hera, Showgirl
Shore Support: Handyman Hank
Suit/Skin: 2/2
Streak Days: 6

Okay, well, we don't exactly "bring" you Bike to Work Week, but I'm sure most of us are Bike Fed members. And if you're not, you should be.
Nevertheless, there are fun events all over town this week, starting with this morning's very well-attended Bike vs. Car at Rainbow Jersey, followed by coffee and yummy baked goods at the Urban Ecology.  Here's a link to all the activities this week:
http://www.bfw.org/events/bike-week/
Today we had another stunning (though aye, a wee bit chilly) swim.  I was thinking that yesterday's storms might have stirred up the lake, but she remains crystal clear.

The water is warming up! Today was another gorgeous day of swimming, and we were accompanied by big schools of tiny fish!  It was like swimming over a reef in the Caribbean.

The only ugly moment to mar an otherwise perfect day occurred when Hank accused Kahuna (in absentia) of making off with his wetsuit, which he had draped over the metal wall.  Fearful of a defamation lawsuit, we encouraged HH to check again, and indeed the wetsuit was found where it had fallen on the other side of the wall.  Whew.  Ugly drama avoided.

And speaking of wetsuits, I have virtually guaranteed record-breaking warm water this summer by ordering a replacement for my tattered  7yr old wetsuit.

The light rain did not deter us from our mission, and today was yet another fine example that there are no boring days at the beach.

It was also a lesson in the philosopy that what you need will be provided when you need it.  Pre-swim, it was raining, and we found an abandoned a golf umbrella.  Post-swim, we were desperate for refreshment, and Itch miraculously provided both Killepitsch and Agwa.

A discussion of flowers on the shore resulted in a bitter argument between Kahuna and me that ended with him shouting, "phlox you!"

And finally, on our return trip from the south sewer pipe,  I was thrilled to spot the treasure chest again,  uncovered after being buried for two summers.

It was another lovely swim this morning.  The water was like glass, and crystal clear.

Gumdrop was already in the water as Itch and I walked down the hill. While we were suiting up, there was a surprise visit (via bicycle, not jetski) from Steve/Scooby.

Itch and I swam to garage and as we were approaching the rock piles, Diablo made his appearance, skin.  Oddly, he resisted our attempts to engage him in conversation in the 49 degree water.

It was an amazing, beautiful morning for a swim. After dislodging a flock of seagulls (not the band) from our spot on the beach, and hemming and hawing whether to declare it "Baltic", we suited up and got in.

The water surface was like glass, and very clear.  Kahuna and I swam to the second birches, Panini went to garage.  It was a fantastic swim.
