Itch has the Itch

Itch stopped by the beach today took a picture and measured 47.3 water temperature.

Kahuna also took a reading last week with his "toe meter" which he claims reliably measured "mid-fifties at least".  Sure, and I've seen pink flamingos wading at Klode beach.

Can't blame either of them for being a bit a bit anxious though. It's been a long winter and playing human ping-pong in the pool is getting old.  Oh, the tyranny of the cursed black line!  The frustration of fighting for lanes with side stroking little old ladies in flower swim caps!  The corrosive effects of chlorine on the lungs and mind!

Oh, for the freedom and challenge of big open water!  The spray, the waves, the clear cool refreshing lake, the camaraderie of the Kru!  The Killepitsch!  It won't be long, but the wait is killing me.

Other signs of summer:  The Estabrook Biergarten is opening tomorrow (Sat Apr 23rd) and will be celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reinheitsgebot, the German beer purity law that defines beer as  containing only four ingredients; water, hops, barley malt, and yeast.  More importantly Showgirl will be celebrating her 50th birthday (again!).  I would not be surprised to see her wearing her dirndl, as people wearing German attire get free beer, half priced beer for everyone else.

But that's only the beginning of the fun.  Next weekend (Thu Apr 28th - Sun May 1st) is Maifest at the Biergarten: http://www.estabrookbeergarden.com/milwaukee-maifest/ .  Stop by and purchase your 100th anniversary of Estabrook Park mug.  (Shameless plug for Friends of Estabrook, of which I am a member, we get at least $5 for every mug sold).

Oh, yes I almost forgot.  On Friday June 10th at 9AM we will be filmed for "Around the Corner with John McGivern".  They are doing an episode on Whitefish Bay and somehow North Shore Nancy arranged for us to be included.

And one more thing.  June 11th is the Shorewood Men's Club Barbecue at Atwater Beach.  Kahuna and I will be selling tickets, and if conditions are right we'll do an Atwater Shipwreck Swim that morning.

A June 10th filming of the Kru? God, how am I going to shed 35 pounds of winter hibernation weight by then? And the likelihood of really cold water that day is high:

From Seinfeld, episode, The Hamptons:

Rachel: So where is this baby, anyway?

Jerry: Oh, check it out. I guarantee you've never seen anything quite so
objectionable. It's down the hall, third door on your left. (Rachel walks
down hall, walks in on George changing out of his swimsuit)

Rachel: (She screams) Oh my God! I'm sorry, I thought this was the baby's
room. I'm really sorry. (She exits)

George: I was in the pool! I was in the pool!

% Jerry and George talking in Jerry's room.

George: Did she do it on purpose?

Jerry: It was my fault, I told her the wrong door.

George: I was supposed to see her. She wasn't supposed to see me.

Jerry: So what?

George: Well ordinarily I wouldn't mind. But...

Jerry: But...

George: Well I just got back from swimming in the pool. And the water was
cold...

Jerry: Oh... You mean... shrinkage.

George: Yes. Significant shrinkage!

Jerry: So you feel you were short changed.

George: Yes! I mean, if she thinks that's me she's under a complete
misapprehension. That was not me, Jerry. That was not me.

Jerry: Well, so what's the difference?

George: What if she discusses it with Jane?

Jerry: Oh, she's not gonna tell Jane.

George: How do you know?

Jerry: Women aren't like us.

George: They're worse! They're much worse than us, they talk about
everything! Couldn't you at least tell her about the shrinkage factor?

Jerry: No, I'm not gonna tell her about your shrinkage. Besides, I think
women know about shrinkage.

George: How do women know about shrinkage? (They see Elaine walking down
the hall) Elaine! Get! (She enters) Do women know about shrinkage?

Elaine: What do you mean, like laundry?

George: No.

Jerry: Like when a man goes swimming... afterwards...

Elaine: It shrinks?

Jerry: Like a frightened turtle!

Elaine: Why does it shrink?

George: It just does!

Lake temperature maps look grim. Water's so cold even the Atwater temp buoy doesn't want to go out there.

Q: What's the difference between an iceberg and a clothes brush?
A: One crushes boats and the other brushes coats!

If swimming is so good for your figure, how do you explain walruses?
