Last Swim of the Season. Or not?

Next Swim:  Sunday 10/6 at 11AM,  note the Lakefront Marathon is being held Sunday morning and the course goes right by Klode, it may be difficult or impossible to get to the parking lot, so it might be necessary to park on a side street and walk there.

Last Swims:
Friday 6AM, Saturday 2PM
Water Temp: 56
Waves:  Gentle rollers
Water Clarity:  Poor Friday, Excellent Saturday
Friday Crew: Gundrop
Saturday Crew:  Cap'n, Gumdrop, Patriarch

I went to the beach today with the idea that this would be my last swim of the season.  The water is cold, the air is colder, the days are short.  It's been a great summer, the best swimming summer by a long shot.  From the beginning of July to the beginning of September we had warm water and outstanding swimming, and I swam more often and further than any previous summer. So time to quit while we're ahead, right?

Cap'n has other ideas.  He believes that because one of the crew proclaimed we will swim to Halloween, we are honor bound to complete that quest.  I tried to argue with him.  Just because some drunken crew member makes some crazy incoherent bluster does not mean we are honor bound to complete the task.  After all, even the crew member that made the quest admits it is a bad idea and is no longer himself committed to the goal.  Cap'n will have none of it.  "The crew must complete the quest" he shouted with a crazy gleam in his eye. "Rum for all and all for rum!"  That's why he's the Cap'n.  I tried to talk to him with wisdom and common sense (that's why I'm the Patriarch), but to no avail.

While Cap'n and me were arguing Gumdrop was muttering half-coherent ramblings about a season ending ceremony involving singing, hired escorts, and lots of Killepitsch.  That's why he's a Gumdrop.

Next Swim: Monday at noon.

Gumdrop and I are both people of leisure this week so we're swimming at noon on Monday. Other days TBD, depending on the weather and how tough I feel.

Last Swim: Monday noon
Next Swim: TBD-- we'll post it
Water Temp: high 50's?
Waves: choppy and from the south
Water Clarity: pretty close to excellent
Crew: Gumdrop, Showgirl

It was beautiful and sunny for a swim against the waves and wind south to the drainpipe. The return trip was much faster, but we both agreed our hands were getting cold by the end.

Tuesday morning report

•Water Temp: about 50
•Air Temp: about 50
•Waves: little rollers
•Clarity: about a 4 on the 10 scale
•Crew: Gumdrop,Showgirl
•Next Swim: TBD

This water definitely had that good cold water bite to it. Though we only managed a sewer pipe swim the rewards from the Lady were still well received.

1:30 swim for today. Yesterday Cap'n logged a swim at 48 F. water temp (with his trusty Cap'n o meter?), though it didn't feel like 48, for some reason we didn't really feel that good cold water bite. You know what I mean Bubba?

Impressive work, gang. Sounds like a mix of mid 50s and high 40s. I determined through multiple clinical trials this season that 53 is my exact breaking point. New Years Day excluded. Yep, I was the silly bastard that suggested an October 31 goal. The crew should have slapped me around for that one. I've retreated indoors to the WAC for the season. However, I can be talked into special events. So, if you boys and girls plan anything big, fun or crazy, let me know. I'll be around for Thanksgiving if anyone wants to try to Turkey Day swim. Other than that, keep in touch. My cell is 404-668-0579 and my email is benspeed@hotmail.com. Ciao!

Okay, well it seems like regular swims have totally died out...

From the warmth and comfort of my kitchen I was pondering a Pumpkin Plunge? The next full moon is Monday the 29th, or of course, there's Halloween on the 31st...

Thoughts?
Beth

Third times a charm-

Sunday afternoon report

•Water Temp: about 52
•Air Temp: about 50
•Waves: at first like glass and then a strong current.
•Clarity: about a 4 on the 10 scale
•Crew: Cap'n,Diablo,Gumdrop,

Monday afternoon report

•Water Temp: about 48
•Air Temp: about 48
•Waves: the force of the waves crashing on the rocks made sound like thunder from down under.
•Clarity: about a 4 on the 10 scale
•Crew: Gumdrop, w/ special guest Cap'n
•Next Swim: TBD

Sunday's and Mondays swims definitely had that cold water bite to it, at least until one starts to warm up to the Lady's love bites. Diablo has continued his fiery skin swim count, I also logged a skin swim on Sat. I don't THINK we've thrown in the towell just quite yet. Hell, Diablo isn't even wearing his wet suit yet :)!

Screen Play: Season Over?
Time: Now.
Scene: The Klode Beach.
Shot: Various members of the Klode Krew lie around on the beach bundled up and looking despondent. The Cap’n and Patriarch stride purposefully across the beach torwards them.
Cap’n: Hey! What's all this laying around stuff? What are you all still laying around here for?
Diablo: What the hell are we supposed to do? It’s cold. There's nothing to swim for anymore.
Show Girl: [to Cap’n] Season’s over, man.
Cap’n: [With a wild look in his eye] What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? . . . Hell no!
Slip ‘n Slide: [to Kahuna] Germans?
Kahuna: Forget it, he's rolling.
Cap’n: And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough... [thinks real hard of something to say] . . . the tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go!
[Cap’n runs out, alone; then returns]
Cap’n: What the F happened to the Krew I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? This could be the greatest season of our lives, but you're gonna let it be the worst. "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you Cap’n, we might get cold." Well just kiss my frozen blue ass from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this! Indoor bikers? Wimps! Indoor runners? Wimps!Indoor swimmers?
Kahuna: Wimps. Cap’n's right. Psychotic ... but absolutely right. We gotta swim this lake! Now we could do it with conventional wet suits, but that could take years for Cap'n to get ready and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid skin swim be done on somebody's part! [que rousing theme music from Patton]
Cap’n: And we're just the guys to do it.
Kahuna: Aye!
Diablo: Aye!
Show Gril: Aye!
Gum Drop: Aye!
Alley Cat: Aye!
Buba: Aye!
Patriarch: [stands up insanely] Yeah, I agree. Let's go swim!
Diablo: Let's swim!
Cap’n: [shouting] "Let's go swwwwwwiiiiiiiiimmmmmm!
[All of the Krew stands up, tear off their clothes as they run across the beach and into lake following Cap’n and Patriarch. Rousing music swells, as testicals don't.]

Just checking to see if anyone is planning to swim in the Hurricane Sandy waves today... Sounds like fun?

Yep, got my boogie board.

The water is now sufficiently cooled for swims to be officially classified as cold water swims (44F. and below). Seems like winter rules are now upon us-

"Welcome to Swim Club. The first rule of Swim Club is: you do not talk about Swim Club. The second rule of Swim Club is: you DO NOT talk about Swim Club! Third rule of Swim Club: someone yells "stop!", goes limp, taps out, the Swim is over. Fourth rule: only two guys to a Swim. Fifth rule: one Swim at a time, fellas. Sixth rule: No shirts, no shoes. Seventh rule: Swims will go on as long as they have to. And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Swim Club, you have to Swim!"
