What better way to celebrate Independence Day than participating in the freedom and challenge of big Open Water! We swam south from Big Bay. The lake bluff is higher than at Klode, the scenery more dramatic. The weather was fine, the camaraderie was great, and the swimming was fantastic (unless you want to quibble about some mildly annoying chop).
In the spirit of rebellion we broke at least three rules posted at the head of the trail leading to the beach. We had a glass bottle. It contained alcohol. And we swam. Yes, the sign says no swimming! I don't get it. It's a beautiful beach, there is public access and no obvious reason not to swim (or to drink, now that I think about it). Can the village really enforce rules like that? Damn it, it's not their lake, it's my lake too!

"Public Trust Doctrine" are the words you are looking for: "All Wisconsin citizens have the right to boat, fish, hunt, ice skate, and swim on navigable waters, as well as enjoy the natural scenic beauty of navigable waters, and enjoy the quality and quantity of water that supports those uses."

I believe this valuable tidbit of legal advice is worth a few trips up and down the ramp at Klode.
I will def be there at 5:30 tonight.
