SATURDAY SHIPWRECK SWIM 8:30 a.m., Atwater
Ahoy! Join us for a swim out to the shipwreck off of Atwater Beach. Meet at 8:30 a.m. Saturday on the
deck in the park overlooking the stairs. There is a lot of great information regarding the ship and the wreck at this website:
http://www.wisconsinshipwrecks.org/vessel/Details/31.
Also, Joe Stoll (FAA licensed drone pilot, who is helping Shorewood put together a
promotional video) will be there to get some drone pictures/video of the swim. I'm hoping for blue skies and clear water, and a goodly number of swimmers. Invite a friend.

Anyone up for a nooner tomorrow? Shipwreck sounds great but 8:30 is an outrageous suggestion.
Tomorrow's 8:30 a.m. time chosen balancing two considerations. We want the sun high enough in the sky, so there is light penetration down to the wreck, but winds (and amount of surface riffle) tend to increase as it gets later in the day.
Of course, water clarity tomorrow is not likely to be helped by today's rain. But you never know.
Forecast still says full sun tomorrow, wind speeds are predicted to be very light overnight, and the air temperature and wind direction forecast are both good. I'm expecting the water temperature also will be in the 70's tomorrow. All-in-all, pretty good set of factors for a shipwreck swim. A nice light swim, before several of us do Big Swell on Sunday. Should be fun, either way.
I’ve not swum with you yet. How far is it to the shipwreck please..
The shipwreck is only a couple of hundred yards offshore.
I'll do a nooner with Wet Taco;).
Anne, thanks for your question, and I hope you do come swimming with us some day. As to the wreck, it's about a 10 minute swim from Atwater Beach. You head from the beach East, but on a East NE Angle. The wreck itself is about 300 feet long, and it's about 15 to 20 feet deep. I've heard various estimates of how far off shore the wreck is. I would estimated it is somewhere between 300 yards to 600 yards from the beach. Sometimes water clarity is bad, and you can't see it. Sometimes clarity is really good, and it's highly visible from the surface. It's an awesome sight. Sometimes (when water clarity is bad), we have to swim around searching for it. Since swimmers are a good ways off shore for this event, this is a good swim to ensure you as a swimmer are visible (bright cap, stick with the group, have a tethered pull buoy) and to take along some extra buoyancy (like wearing a full wetsuit, or having a tethered pull buoy). Remember, while we are a welcoming group, and while we can't prevent anyone from swimming with us, only experienced open water swimmers should go on this swim. This is all "participate at your own risk." There are no lifeguards or rescue boats provided. If you question your abilities, choose another day to try swimming with us.
I am interested in swimming with your group this coming up Sunday. How far do you swim? Will there someone to watch our valuables? What time are you swimming on Sunday?
Pat -- Welcome to Milwaukee, and yes, come swim with us! This Sunday is a little odd, in that many of us are doing the Big Swell Race in Milwaukee. So either do that race, or watch the blog, to see if non-racers schedule a regular swim on Sunday. Sunday swims are usually at noon, but you have to check the blog.
Great! Mysely and two other people may want to swim this Sunday. I will keep an eye out for your pores. Thanks for the information and good luck on your race.
I’ve been swimming 800 to 1,000 meters for the past few weeks but always close to the ropes for I’ve been swimming at odd times.. The other night I was out swimming at 9 pm and the stars were beautiful..
This is Saturday, right? May join you guys.
Where's that full sun they've been forecasting for days?
Hmm, a lawyer believing a weather man, there has got to be a joke in there sonewhere.
