Last swim: Tuesday, June 20, 6am
Next swim: rest of the week at 6 am and 6pm, or any time any of us decides to swim!
Air temp: actually not sure, but it was lovely, and warmer than the water...
Water temp: 63℉
Clarity: really clear, we could easily track our swim by watching the ripples of sand along the lake bottom, sun glinting, shadows casting, entertaining.
Waves: very slight, essentially flat
Kru: there were three or four swimmers out on the early shift. It looked like Laguna and Sunny, Mr Anonymous, and perhaps Mystery Man? Then there were Mermaid Princess, Fin-fyn, Lydia (oh Lydia!) the Tattooed Lady, Gabby, Magic Mike, and another woman I have not had the good fortune to meet yet, but who definitely seems familiar with the Kru (I should get out more).

Because I am all together too cheap to go off and buy a new wetsuit, and because I have destroyed the cheap ones I always get, I have been without a wetsuit this spring. For a while, in the crazy water-warmth of this early spring, that has not been too much of an issue. But in the course of the last week or so, the water has been just shy of comfortable without a wetsuit. People often swam anyway. Today was a reward. 63 felt mild and the clarity and the sunshine added to the reward.

I have been reading Roger Deakin's book Waterlog this spring (thanks Sheila). The subtitle, "A Swimmer's Journey Through Britain" is a hint that it is something of a swimming travelogue. Considering some of the places he swims-- muddy ditches, the moat around his house, the industrial Thames in London, other places where he arguably shouldn't be swimming-- I am reminded of the privilege and damned good luck we all have to be able to swim in our lake every day. A few dead gobies are nuthin to us!

Anyone planning to go this evening?

Those were complete mystery swimmers this morning. Mr. A walked down with us and got in as I was taking the water temp. Yay! More mystery swimmers!

Yeah, we are lucky where we get to swim. The chapter in Waterlog where he is swimming in the place with all the eels? Creeped me out.

And returning the debate from yesterday's comments section, I was tempted to respond to Synchro "phlox you," but I enjoyed her PSA commercial too much. And the "phlox vs. dame's rocket" debate is historically the number one botanical debate on this blog. Ask Showgirl. She may still owe someone money on a bet on the issue.

Switching to ornothology, has anyone noticed the acrobatics of the flock of little bank swallows, that have been building their nests on the steep part of North Beach? Kind of impressive. For further info: https://www.mlive.com/news/2018/05/why_these_tiny_birds_are_pokin.html.

Swam last night, sorry Serious Athlete. Could have used a buddy - oh what a change from the morning. Rather fast waves coming in, with chop and current. Much water swallowed. 66-67 in the stirred up part, 63(?) out in the blue. Rough short swim for me. Temps were absolutely delightful and out in the blue water was a treat. Seemed all the dead fish issues are now a chapter in Swim Season ‘23 History. Oh at 6pm on sunny days ‘not clear’ goggles are a must.

I was part of the early group on Tuesday (or at least tagging along a ways behind them) - was visiting from Chicago and discovered your swim spot through this blog. It's a beautiful place and I really enjoyed my swim. Hope to be back again soon. I swim here in Chicago at Promontory Point and sometimes Ohio St Beach, both of which are worth checking out when any of you swim-minded folks are in town.

Happy Solstice!

Hey, I just stumbled across your blog here! I've been swimming alone at Fox Brook in Brookfield but would love to link up with some of you. How does this work exactly? If I show up to Klode Park this Saturday or Sunday at 6:00 a.m., some of you will be there to swim?

Hi Andrew -we are a very informal group-yes just show up! However on weekends there is a small group at 8am and a bigger Kru at noon. (6am on Saturday and Sunday is just barbaric!) Weekdays (M-F) there is usually a group at 6am -and 6pm. See you at the beach!
