We're in that zone of fits and starts for morning swimming, No regular schedule yet.
It's so great to be standing on the beach in the warm air again. Gone is that special misery of wondering whether you will freeze to death struggling out of your wetsuit.
Yesterday and today TTL, Lt. MJ and I met, applied our gear, and swam north.
Yesterday TTL and MJ went as far as the rock wall, I slogged to the garage.
Today we made a somewhat indifferent voyage to garage, with a loop around the rockpile.
Air temps right by the water are cool, and then at some point heading up the ramp you hit a wall of soggy, warm air.

I'm interested in getting back out there! Did just a few swims last summer and it was great. I don't have neoprene gloves, boots, or a hood yet... Is it too cold to go without or should I bite the bullet and purchase some?
Right now I would say the gloves boots and neoprene cap are necessary if you want to really swim and not just go in for a little bit. The water is only 48-49. Today felt pretty cold - even with the gear. I think mid 50's is about when I start thinking about ditching the gloves and boots...
Bite the bullet.
It's an investment in your happiness. :)
TTL and MJ swim in neoprene mittens from Lake Effect in Shorewood.
I use these gloves:

As for hoods, I use something like this, plus a couple of silicone caps:

Lake Effect has several models of booties. I like Body Glove flipper slippers that I got from Swim Outlet.
FYI-
Here are other noteworthy logs from the Whitefish Bay Police Department from May 2-Sunday:
A wallet containing cash and credit cards was reported stolen from a car parked at Klode Park on May 2 around 2 p.m., logs said. A credit card from the wallet was used at the Apple store at Bayshore Mall that day.
