Full Moon Swim Tonight*

Friday 07/27, 8PM - Full Moon Swim, details in the previous blog entry.

Also, Cap'n wants to meet at 7pm to get in a longer swim

Weekend swims: noon both days

Last Swims:
Thursday and Friday 6am
Water Temp: 67
Waves:  flat with a few breezy ruffles
Water Clarity: Crystal clear Friday morning, nearly so on Thursday
Thursday Crew:  Magic Mike, Laguna, Showgirl, Panini, Flipper Guy
Friday Crew: Magic Mike, Scooby, Showgirl, Flipper Guy, five or so triathletes

 6PM swims as well.

There was more swimming perfection this morning. Flat, clear, warm water. I made it to mudslide, and then took my time on the return trip.  On the way back, I saw a tennis ball, a small submerged tree, and, most interestingly, a pair of swimming trunks.  Light blue with some stripes.  I tossed them on the shore a bit north of sewer pipe, so if they're yours, you know where to find them.

Last night, several of us attended Kahuna's Greater Shorewood Biker's event at Three Lions, benefiting the World Bicycle Relief organization.  It was also a Harry Potter costume extravaganza!  We enjoyed the fabulous ambiance of the 3 Lions outdoor seating, and nearly everyone scored on the raffle.  As if we needed any more fun, then we took a leisurely roll over to Atwater to enjoy the amazing beauty of the full moon.

*guaranteed to be the best swim of the season

They Lived to Tell the Tale (or, At Least They're Not Dead Yet, or, At Least, as of this Moment, Kahuna's Not Dead Yet)
Friday, 10:30 a.m.
Location: Milwaukee River (the 1.5 Mile Cream City Classic Race Course)
Crew: Conner and Kahuna
Water Temp: 72? with some cooler spots occasionally
Current: Moderate

Connor and I volunteered to be the Canaries in the Coal Mine, and to test swim the course for the Cream City Classic. Connor is an occasional Kru member from out west, and says he will be at the Moon Swim tonight. He and I went into the water West of the Hoan bridge at the confluence of the Milwaukee and Kinnickinnic. We swam with an escort boat from Milwaukee River Keepers and some volunteer kayakers who were just curious to watch us dissolve before their very eyes. Once in the water, the water tent is light greenish (not brown, as it appears from above, and the clarity (today at least) wasn't any worse than a moderately stirred up day off Klode. Swam under some bridges, and you get to watch cars drive over the grating as you swim by. Encountered nothing at all icky during the course of the swim. Occasionally a boat would go by, and you'd get that diesel or gas taste in the water, but not any worse than swimming in Peewaukee Lake on a busy summer weekend. Current was noticeable heading upstream, and coming back. Took me an hour to swim what they said was 1.5 miles round trip, but which my watch says was 2.5 miles (but then, I'm not known for swimming straight). It should be an interesting race on Aug. 11th, but I would not recommend it if you've not done a race before (or health impaired). I've encouraged them to offer a shorter race option next year as well, as I think there are people who'd like to do a Milwaukee River swim, but who don't want to do a 1.5 mile Milwaukee River swim. Nice thing about the course is I think there is a river walk all the way along the river bank, but I'm not positive about that.

Thanks for the river report, Kahuna. Somehow, I had convinced myself that there wouldn't be any current. LOL.
