I need you to keep an open mind as you read the next sentence.  Last night at the bar after the full moon swim we learned from Connor that a group that includes Milwaukee Riverkeeper and others are investigating the possibility of a swim event in the Milwaukee River perhaps as early as next year.

Go ahead say it; "Ick. Poo. Yuck.".  I can't blame anyone for being skeptical.  But keep in mind that the whole idea is to demonstrate the tremendous progress that has been made cleaning up the river.  I remember my mom telling me about swimming in the river when she was a girl, and I think it would be awesome if it could be demonstrated that the river is safely swimmable again.

There aren't many details yet other than the swim would be near the river mouth near the swing bridge where the river is deeper and slower.  One thing for sure:  it will be warmer than the lake.

When I was in Chattanooga last summer, there was a relatively large contingent of open water swimmers plying their trade in the waters of the Tennessee river nas it flowed through town. Whats good for the Tennessee goose might be good for the MKE gander.

I'd do it! People swim in the Hudson in NYC. On another note, can we do an Eclipse swim on the 21st? Begins: Mon, Aug 21, 2017 at 11:53 am, Maximum: Mon, Aug 21, 2017 at 1:18 pm
Ends: Mon, Aug 21, 2017 at 2:40 pm.

I'd do it. I remember when the goal was to have the river swimmable by like 2030. The question is depth and debris. Swimming into logs and lures (and snakes) in tennessee rivers wigged me out.

Did anybody mention that Kahuna has been talking about a 1 mile swim race in the Milwaukee River for about a year now? If folks can swim the Hudson and the Bospphorus, healthy (non-immune system impaired) members of the Milwaukee swimming community should be able to role the dice and take a swim in the Milwaukee River, with the goal on publicizing the tremendous progress the River has made, and how we want the River to improve even more. My idea was that participants would enter the water just South of where the North Avenue Dam used to be, then swim downstream to a good exit point (like the Harp, or some place else where they would hopefully let participants hose off). Why do the swim at the (relatively ugly) mouth of the river? Loraine indicated she knows a guy at UWM who does lots of tests on the Milwaukee River, who might be able to advise regarding when and where on the river it would be best from a health perspective to do such a swim (variables include time of year, river level, and how soon after a big rain). I can help out with advising the organizers about how to do the participation agreement and waiver of liability agreement properly. I'm for this event.
