Rain Out, Freeze Out

Next Swims:
   Sunday & Monday at Noon

Last (attempted) Swim:
 Saturday 09/01 noon
 Water temp: FORTY-NINE
Waves: swells out of the south
 Clarity: zero
Crew: Kahuna, Magic Mike, Cap'n, Patriarch, Showgirl

Six of us arrived in the parking lot at noon. Some fished around in their cars for raingear.

Yet still we were optimistic.

Amateur meteorologists that we are, we all agreed that the threat of thunderstorms was past.

The rain increased as we took the stairs down to the beach.

Only Itch and I made our way to the water and got out our thermometers. Even before the temperature readout began dropping, my feet were speaking the truth. Patriarch approached, and when I said, "forty-nine" he retreated to safety.

Itch expressed profound ambivalence regarding the lack of swimming, but we commenced to comfort ourselves with alcohol-- tiny bubbles courtesy of Itch.

Sunday is looking much better.

Oh yeah, the haikru contest continues, see yesterday's post.

  4. For tohose of you planning on going to Chicago next Saturday for Big Sholders, I checked today to see what the water temp is at the Ohio Street Beach. This website https://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/parks-facilities/ohio-street-beach says it was 73 degrees this afternoon. That seems better than 48 degrees.

  6. I said something about swimming early today. I'm up for it at 9am. THAT SAID, I just looked at the lake temps website and it looks like the water temps are still in the upper 40's. Text me if you really want to do it. 414.331.8498

  14. Hey, if you are swimming in the lake tomorrow, do so with extreme care. That size wave, with lots of run off and debris in the water, and 50 degree temps or so -- not a lot of margin for error or rescue. I'm all for adventure, but not stupidity.

  15. I'd like to carpool too - could you pick me up at the Holt Avenue Park n Ride? Will kick in for gas.

  16. To Dragonfly (and anyone else who is considering carpooling): send me an email (pendleton@pendletonlegal.com), so can work out details. Thxs.

Take a look at today's temp graph. 68? Too bad I have to be in Madison tonight.

  18. If the water is anything close to 60 I'm in. Atwater buoy says 55 though. Anyone else have a better temperature predictor?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Atwater buoy is up to 68 which is not always accurate for Klode. yesterday after all that rain it was only 48. Crap shoot is Klodes' middle name.
